Pre-Setup Requirements

VPS Server — Minimum Specs

  • Minimum 2GB RAM, 1 CPU core, 20GB SSD
  • Recommended: Hostinger KVM VPS (starts at $4.50/mo)
  • Alternative: DigitalOcean ($4/mo), Vultr ($2.50/mo)

What You’ll Need

  • Domain name (your business domain)
  • DNS access (ability to add A/AAAA records)
  • Phone number for WhatsApp Business
  • 30 minutes — that’s all you need

Step 1: VPS Setup (15 minutes)

  1. Choose your VPS provider and create a server
  2. Select Debian 12 as the OS
  3. Note your server IP address
  4. SSH into your server (or use the web console)
  5. Run system updates: sudo apt update && sudo apt upgrade -y
  6. Install Node.js: curl -fsSL https://deb.nodesource.com/setup_20.x | sudo -E bash - && sudo apt install -y nodejs
  7. Install OpenClaw: npm install -g openclaw@latest
  8. Verify: openclaw --version

Step 2: OpenClaw Configuration (5 minutes)

  1. Run the setup wizard: openclaw setup
  2. Choose your preferred AI model
  3. Set your language and timezone
  4. Configure notification preferences
  5. Set up admin credentials

Step 3: Connect Messaging Channels (5 minutes)

WhatsApp

  1. Install WhatsApp on your phone
  2. In OpenClaw: Channels → Add → WhatsApp
  3. Scan the QR code
  4. Wait for connection confirmation ✅

Telegram (Optional)

  1. Create a bot via @BotFather
  2. Copy the bot token
  3. In OpenClaw: Channels → Add → Telegram
  4. Paste the token and save

Signal (Optional)

  1. Install Signal Desktop
  2. In OpenClaw: Channels → Add → Signal
  3. Link your Signal account

Step 4: Connect WordPress (Optional)

  1. Install the OpenClaw WordPress plugin (or use REST API)
  2. Generate application password: Users → Profile
  3. Add your WordPress site URL and credentials in OpenClaw
  4. Test the connection

Step 5: Customize Your Assistant

  1. Set your business name and branding
  2. Configure AI personality and tone
  3. Add FAQ responses
  4. Set up automation rules (auto-respond, content scheduling, lead capture, booking)

Step 6: Security Hardening

  1. Disable root SSH login
  2. Set up SSH key authentication
  3. Configure firewall (UFW)
  4. Enable automatic security updates
  5. Set up regular backups

Step 7: Testing & Go-Live

  1. Send a test message via WhatsApp/Telegram
  2. Verify AI responses are accurate and on-brand
  3. Test all connected channels
  4. Check notification delivery
  5. Review automation rules

Monthly Maintenance

  • Update OpenClaw: npm install -g openclaw@latest
  • Check disk space: df -h
  • Review security logs
